This tree shows out once again in the fall with bright red foliage. ‘Dixie Spirit’ shows off a gorgeous crimson red color in the spring while fading to a bronze or olive green in the summer. We are still monitoring the tree to see if the upright habit continues in perpetuity. ‘Dixie Spirit’ grows decidedly upright at least while young. There are several trees currently on the market that come close such as ‘Lionheart’ and ‘English Lace’ but neither of these varieties have quite the same upward growth as ‘Seiryu’.‘Dixie Spirit’ is our introduction that fits into this category. While, I’ve learned that this was probably hyperbole, I have long been searching for a tree that fit this description. My father once told me that if anyone could ever discover a red version of ‘Seiryu’, then they would be a millionaire. In our climate the first cold air may give the tree an orange or red appearance but the leaves will always end up burgundy before dropping.ġ0 Year Size: Height: 12-14 Feet Width: 12-14 FeetĪcer palmatum ‘Dixie Spirit’ is one of several different dissectum varieties that grows more upright rather than weeping. Most literature describes the fall color as gold or yellow but I have never seen this except in photos from other parts of the world. Sometimes in late summer the colorful margins reappear, but this time a little more orange. These margins quickly fade away leaving a very attractive medium green leaf for summer. The foliage appears green in spring with a slight red or pink tinge to the margins of each leaf. Seiryu is a fast growing small tree that is mostly vase shaped when young growing wider and much rounder with age. That being said, here at Maple Ridge Nurseries we love the plant we affectionately call the "weed" because it is so easy to grow. Actually the leaves are so much smaller, that even the leaves do not have the appearance of other dissectums. This is technically correct but the dissected leaf is the only similarity between 'Seiryu' and other dissectums. Its claim to fame is that Acer palmatum 'Seiryu' is considered the only upright dissectum. Our larger sizes (7 Gallon and bigger) are only available for in store pickup. Our 1 Gallon and 3 Gallon sizes are available for shipping and in store pickup. Fall color is a mix of fiery reds with a hint of orange undertone that predictably puts on one of the falls best shows.ġ0 Year Size: Height 6-8 Feet Width 8-10 Feet New growth is dark red in spring and holds very well especially in sunny locations. 'Tamukeyama' Dwarf Japanese Maple is one of the fastest growing weeping Japanese maples we grow, slightly more irregular and upright than other lace leaf varieties. 'Tamukeyama' not only tolerates but actually thrives in our hot Georgia summers even in full sun. Recently it has become accepted as one of the best lace leaf varieties in cultivation, and probably the best red lace leaf for hot climates. Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' Dwarf Japanese maple has been grown in Japan for around 300 years.
